I DIY DO – How to make your own Pallet Table Top

Getting married is one of the biggest and most personal celebrations you will plan in you lifetime. While it took a while for Richard and I to get from our engagement to our wedding day, we both knew what kind of wedding we wanted from the start.

Our must haves were a location that we could have both the ceremony and reception at, fun activities to keep the kids (and adults) happy, some beautiful lighting and lots of personalised touches.

As the location we picked was a farm rather than a specific wedding venue, I was able to get really creative with every aspect. We hired in some beautiful wooden tables and benches, a vintage blue signing table and lawn games then then got stuck into making some special pieces.

With inspiration from Pinterest then some help from Bunnings and my talented family we managed to DIY a kids pallet table, pallet drinks station, signage, love swings,  an arbour and some smaller projects.

It was really important to me that everything we made could be re-used after the wedding too so definitely feel free to give some of these projects a try for your next function or even your own backyard.

How to make your own Pallet Table Top

This is such an easy project to do at home. Probably the hardest part for me was moving the pallet around because they can be a little heavy. There are a few building sites where we live so we found free pallets quite easily, you can also search Gumtree or Facebook to find them around your area. The number of pallets you need will depend on how high you want the table. We used one for the kids area and six for the drinks table.

Tip: when searching for free pallets try go for ones with less planks on the underside if you can.

What you need:

• 1 x pallet
• 1 x piece of premium plywood (1200 x 1198 x 12mm)
• Sandpaper & Sanding Block
• Sikkens Cetol Timber Finish in Dark Oak (or your preferred shade)
• Wide paintbrush
• 4 x 40x2mm bullet head nails
• Hammer

How To:

1. Measure the top of your pallet. The standard size in Australia is 1165x1165mm but it is always good to check.
2. Head to your local Bunnings to grab your supplies. While there ask to have your piece of plywood cut down to size.
3. Once home start preparing your plywood by sanding the edges so that they are smooth and the corners slightly rounded.
4. Wipe down with a dry cloth to remove any dust from sanding.
5. Paint with a coat of timber finish.
6. Once dry carefully place the plywood piece onto the pallet ensuring that edges are lined up and the side with the most wooden planks is facing upwards.
7. Hammer a nail into each of the four corners ensuring that they are flush with the plywood.

Voila! I then popped the kids area pallet on a picnic rug with some paper / crayons and kids toys as well as adding some Baby’s-breath (Gypsophila) around the pallets for the drinks table to finish the look.
